A Renault HGV cement mixer collided with the woman's Ford Focus

A woman has been treated for spinal injuries after a horror crash involving a cement mixer on the A19.

Cleveland Police have now launched an appeal for information after the crash near Elwick on Wednesday, which saw the major route closed northbound for several hours and cause huge traffic disruption.

The smash happened at 9.37 am when a Renault HGV cement mixer travelling hit the rear of a Ford Focus, causing serious damage. The Ford Focus was stationary with its hazard warning lights on in lane one near Elwick, with the woman in the driver's seat.

Cleveland Fire Brigade rescued the woman, in her 40s, from the vehicle and she was then taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment.

The northbound carriageway was closed between the A689 Wolviston turn-off to A179 Sheraton junction for about three hours while the southbound route was also briefly closed as emergency services cleared the scene.

The 40-year-old HGV driver sustained bruising to his shoulder and elbow and was seen at the hospital but was not kept in.

Cleveland Police as said enquiries are ongoing and appealed for anyone with dashcam footage from the area at the time to contact them
